Memphis' Derrick Rose to Declare This Week

Sources close to Memphis point guard Derrick Rose say he will declare for the NBA Draft later this week. This comes to no surprise after Rose's NCAA Tournament performance. Rose averaged 14.9 PPG and 4.7 APG, in his only season with the National Champion runner-up Memphis Tigers. Rose elevated his game with 20.8 PPG in the tournament and considered by many to be a top two pick in the June 26 NBA Draft. If certain teams win the NBA lottery, Rose could be selected first over favored number one pick Michael Beasley, who officially declared yesterday. Also, Rose is in the process of signing an agent, which would make him ineligible to play another season of college basketball.

If you have read previous posts concerning players leaving early for the NBA, you know that I don't like it because it hurts college basketball, but in certain cases it is acceptable. In Derrick Rose's case, I am very understanding of his decision to declare for the pros. I'm not going to rant on again about why I don't like to see young guys leave, but I am going to praise Rose. Rose led the Memphis Tigers all season long and without him they probably don't even make it to the Final Four. He put Memphis over the top as an elite college program and John Calipari should give Rose a lot of credit for what he has done this season.
